개정 대하 8:1 솔로몬이 여호와의 전과 자기의 궁궐을 이십 년 동안에 건축하기를 마치고
2 후람이 솔로몬에게 되돌려 준 성읍들을 솔로몬이 건축하여 이스라엘 자손에게 거기에 거주하게 하니라
3 ○솔로몬이 가서 하맛소바를 쳐서 점령하고
4 또 광야에서 다드몰을 건축하고 하맛에서 모든 국고성들을 건축하고
5 또 윗 벧호론과 아랫 벧호론을 건축하되 성벽과 문과 문빗장이 있게 하여 견고한 성읍으로 만들고
6 또 바알랏과 자기에게 있는 모든 국고성들과 모든 병거성들과 마병의 성들을 건축하고 솔로몬이 또 예루살렘과 레바논과 그가 다스리는 온 땅에 건축하고자 하던 것을 다 건축하니라
7 ○이스라엘이 아닌 헷 족속과 아모리 족속과 브리스 족속과 히위 족속과 여부스 족속의 남아 있는 모든 자
8 곧 이스라엘 자손이 다 멸하지 않았으므로 그 땅에 남아 있는 그들의 자손들을 솔로몬이 역꾼으로 삼아 오늘에 이르렀으되
9 오직 이스라엘 자손은 솔로몬이 노예로 삼아 일을 시키지 아니하였으니 그들은 군사와 지휘관의 우두머리들과 그의 병거와 마병의 지휘관들이 됨이라
10 솔로몬 왕의 공장을 감독하는 자들이 이백오십 명이라 그들이 백성을 다스렸더라
11 ○솔로몬이 바로의 딸을 데리고 다윗 성에서부터 그를 위하여 건축한 왕궁에 이르러 이르되 내 아내가 이스라엘 왕 다윗의 왕궁에 살지 못하리니 이는 여호와의 궤가 이른 곳은 다 거룩함이니라 하였더라
12 ○솔로몬이 낭실 앞에 쌓은 여호와의 제단 위에 여호와께 번제를 드리되
13 모세의 명령을 따라 매일의 일과대로 안식일과 초하루와 정한 절기 곧 일년의 세 절기 무교절과 칠칠절과 초막절에 드렸더라
14 ○솔로몬이 또 그의 아버지 다윗의 규례를 따라 제사장들의 반열을 정하여 섬기게 하고 레위 사람들에게도 그 직분을 맡겨 매일의 일과대로 찬송하며 제사장들 앞에서 수종들게 하며 또 문지기들에게 그 반열을 따라 각 문을 지키게 하였으니 이는 하나님의 사람 다윗이 전에 이렇게 명령하였음이라
15 제사장들과 레위 사람들이 국고 일에든지 무슨 일에든지 왕이 명령한 바를 전혀 어기지 아니하였더라
16 ○솔로몬이 여호와의 전의 기초를 쌓던 날부터 준공하기까지 모든 것을 완비하였으므로 여호와의 전 공사가 결점 없이 끝나니라
17 ○그 때에 솔로몬이 에돔 땅의 바닷가 에시온게벨과 엘롯에 이르렀더니
18 후람이 그의 신복들에게 부탁하여 배와 바닷길을 아는 종들을 보내매 그들이 솔로몬의 종들과 함께 오빌에 이르러 거기서 금 사백오십 달란트를 얻어 솔로몬 왕에게로 가져왔더라

개정 대하 9:1 스바 여왕이 솔로몬의 명성을 듣고 와서 어려운 질문으로 솔로몬을 시험하고자 하여 예루살렘에 이르니 매우 많은 시종들을 거느리고 향품과 많은 금과 보석을 낙타에 실었더라 그가 솔로몬에게 나아와 자기 마음에 있는 것을 다 말하매
2 솔로몬이 그가 묻는 말에 다 대답하였으니 솔로몬이 몰라서 대답하지 못한 것이 없었더라
3 스바 여왕이 솔로몬의 지혜와 그가 건축한 궁과
4 그의 상의 음식물과 그의 신하들의 좌석과 그의 신하들이 도열한 것과 그들의 공복과 술 관원들과 그들의 공복과 여호와의 전에 올라가는 층계를 보고 정신이 황홀하여
5 왕께 말하되 내가 내 나라에서 당신의 행위와 당신의 지혜에 대하여 들은 소문이 진실하도다
6 내가 그 말들을 믿지 아니하였더니 이제 와서 본즉 당신의 지혜가 크다 한 말이 그 절반도 못 되니 당신은 내가 들은 소문보다 더하도다
7 복되도다 당신의 사람들이여, 복되도다 당신의 이 신하들이여, 항상 당신 앞에 서서 당신의 지혜를 들음이로다
8 당신의 하나님 여호와를 송축할지로다 하나님이 당신을 기뻐하시고 그 자리에 올리사 당신의 하나님 여호와를 위하여 왕이 되게 하셨도다 당신의 하나님이 이스라엘을 사랑하사 영원히 견고하게 하시려고 당신을 세워 그들의 왕으로 삼아 정의와 공의를 행하게 하셨도다 하고
9 이에 그가 금 백이십 달란트와 매우 많은 향품과 보석을 왕께 드렸으니 스바 여왕이 솔로몬 왕께 드린 향품 같은 것이 전에는 없었더라
10 (후람의 신하들과 솔로몬의 신하들도 오빌에서 금을 실어 올 때에 백단목과 보석을 가져온지라
11 왕이 백단목으로 여호와의 전과 왕궁의 층대를 만들고 또 노래하는 자들을 위하여 수금과 비파를 만들었으니 이같은 것들은 유다 땅에서 전에는 보지 못하였더라)
12 솔로몬 왕이 스바 여왕이 가져온 대로 답례하고 그 외에 또 그의 소원대로 구하는 것을 모두 주니 이에 그가 그의 신하들과 더불어 본국으로 돌아갔더라
13 ○솔로몬의 세입금의 무게가 금 육백육십육 달란트요
14 그 외에 또 무역상과 객상들이 가져온 것이 있고 아라비아 왕들과 그 나라 방백들도 금과 은을 솔로몬에게 가져온지라
15 솔로몬 왕이 쳐서 늘인 금으로 큰 방패 이백 개를 만들었으니 방패 하나에 든 금이 육백 세겔이며
16 또 쳐서 늘인 금으로 작은 방패 삼백 개를 만들었으니 방패 하나에 든 금이 삼백 세겔이라 왕이 이것들을 레바논 나무 궁에 두었더라
17 왕이 또 상아로 큰 보좌를 만들고 순금으로 입혔으니
18 그 보좌에는 여섯 층계와 금 발판이 있어 보좌와 이어졌고 앉는 자리 양쪽에는 팔걸이가 있고 팔걸이 곁에는 사자가 하나씩 섰으며
19 또 열두 사자가 있어 그 여섯 층계 양쪽에 섰으니 어떤 나라에도 이같이 만든 것이 없었더라
20 솔로몬 왕이 마시는 그릇은 다 금이요 레바논 나무 궁의 그릇들도 다 순금이라 솔로몬의 시대에 은을 귀하게 여기지 아니함은
21 왕의 배들이 후람의 종들과 함께 다시스로 다니며 그 배들이 삼 년에 일 차씩 다시스의 금과 은과 상아와 원숭이와 공작을 실어옴이더라
22 ○솔로몬 왕의 재산과 지혜가 천하의 모든 왕들보다 큰지라
23 천하의 열왕이 하나님께서 솔로몬의 마음에 주신 지혜를 들으며 그의 얼굴을 보기 원하여
24 각기 예물을 가지고 왔으니 곧 은 그릇과 금 그릇과 의복과 갑옷과 향품과 말과 노새라 해마다 정한 수가 있었더라
25 솔로몬의 병거 메는 말의 외양간은 사천이요 마병은 만 이천 명이라 병거성에도 두고 예루살렘 왕에게도 두었으며
26 솔로몬이 유브라데 강에서부터 블레셋 땅과 애굽 지경까지의 모든 왕을 다스렸으며
27 왕이 예루살렘에서 은을 돌 같이 흔하게 하고 백향목을 평지의 뽕나무 같이 많게 하였더라
28 솔로몬을 위하여 애굽과 각국에서 말들을 가져왔더라
29 ○이 외에 솔로몬의 시종 행적은 선지자 나단의 글과 실로 사람 아히야의 예언과 선견자 잇도의 묵시 책 곧 잇도가 느밧의 아들 여로보암에 대하여 쓴 책에 기록되지 아니하였느냐
30 솔로몬이 예루살렘에서 온 이스라엘을 다스린 지 사십 년이라
31 솔로몬이 그의 조상들과 함께 자매 그의 아버지 다윗의 성에 장사되고 그의 아들 르호보암이 대신하여 왕이 되니라

개정 대하 10:1 르호보암이 세겜으로 갔으니 이는 온 이스라엘이 그를 왕으로 삼고자 하여 세겜에 이르렀음이더라
2 느밧의 아들 여로보암이 전에 솔로몬 왕의 낯을 피하여 애굽으로 도망하여 있었더니 이 일을 듣고 여로보암이 애굽에서부터 돌아오매
3 무리가 사람을 보내어 그를 불렀더라 여로보암과 온 이스라엘이 와서 르호보암에게 말하여 이르되
4 왕의 아버지께서 우리의 멍에를 무겁게 하였으나 왕은 이제 왕의 아버지께서 우리에게 시킨 고역과 메운 무거운 멍에를 가볍게 하소서 그리하시면 우리가 왕을 섬기겠나이다
5 르호보암이 그들에게 대답하되 삼 일 후에 다시 내게로 오라 하매 백성이 가니라
6 ○르호보암 왕이 그의 아버지 솔로몬의 생전에 그 앞에 모셨던 원로들과 의논하여 이르되 너희는 이 백성에게 어떻게 대답하도록 권고하겠느냐 하니
7 그들이 대답하여 이르되 왕이 만일 이 백성을 후대하여 기쁘게 하고 선한 말을 하시면 그들이 영원히 왕의 종이 되리이다 하나
8 왕은 원로들이 가르치는 것을 버리고 그 앞에 모시고 있는 자기와 함께 자라난 젊은 신하들과 의논하여
9 이르되 너희는 이 백성에게 어떻게 대답하도록 권고하겠느냐 백성이 내게 말하기를 왕의 아버지께서 우리에게 메운 멍에를 가볍게 하라 하였느니라 하니
10 함께 자라난 젊은 신하들이 왕께 말하여 이르되 이 백성들이 왕께 아뢰기를 왕의 아버지께서 우리의 멍에를 무겁게 하였으나 왕은 우리를 위하여 가볍게 하라 하였은즉 왕은 대답하시기를 내 새끼 손가락이 내 아버지의 허리보다 굵으니
11 내 아버지가 너희에게 무거운 멍에를 메게 하였으나 이제 나는 너희의 멍에를 더욱 무겁게 할지라 내 아버지는 가죽 채찍으로 너희를 치셨으나 나는 전갈 채찍으로 하리라 하소서 하더라
12 ○삼 일 만에 여로보암과 모든 백성이 르호보암에게 나왔으니 이는 왕이 명령하여 이르기를 삼 일 만에 내게로 다시 오라 하였음이라
13 왕이 포학한 말로 대답할새 르호보암이 원로들의 가르침을 버리고
14 젊은 신하들의 가르침을 따라 그들에게 말하여 이르되 내 아버지는 너희의 멍에를 무겁게 하였으나 나는 더 무겁게 할지라 내 아버지는 가죽 채찍으로 너희를 치셨으나 나는 전갈 채찍으로 치리라 하니라
15 왕이 이같이 백성의 말을 듣지 아니하였으니 이 일은 하나님께로 말미암아 난 것이라 여호와께서 전에 실로 사람 아히야로 하여금 느밧의 아들 여로보암에게 이르신 말씀을 응하게 하심이더라
16 ○온 이스라엘은 왕이 자기들의 말을 듣지 아니함을 보고 왕에게 대답하여 이르되 우리가 다윗과 무슨 관계가 있느냐 이새의 아들에게서 받을 유산이 없도다 이스라엘아 각각 너희의 장막으로 돌아가라 다윗이여 이제 너는 네 집이나 돌보라 하고 온 이스라엘이 그들의 장막으로 돌아가니라
17 그러나 유다 성읍들에 사는 이스라엘 자손들에게는 르호보암이 그들의 왕이 되었더라
18 르호보암 왕이 역꾼의 감독 하도람을 보냈더니 이스라엘 자손이 저를 돌로 쳐 죽인지라 르호보암 왕이 급히 수레에 올라 예루살렘으로 도망하였더라
19 이에 이스라엘이 다윗의 집을 배반하여 오늘날까지 이르니라

개정 대하 11:1 르호보암이 예루살렘에 이르러 유다와 베냐민 족속을 모으니 택한 용사가 십팔만 명이라 이스라엘과 싸워 나라를 회복하여 르호보암에게 돌리려 하더니
2 여호와의 말씀이 하나님의 사람 스마야에게 임하여 이르시되
3 솔로몬의 아들 유다 왕 르호보암과 유다와 베냐민에 속한 모든 이스라엘 무리에게 말하여 이르기를
4 여호와께서 이같이 말씀하시기를 너희는 올라가지 말라 너희 형제와 싸우지 말고 각기 집으로 돌아가라 이 일이 내게로 말미암아 난 것이라 하셨다 하라 하신지라 그들이 여호와의 말씀을 듣고 돌아가고 여로보암을 치러 가던 길에서 되돌아왔더라
5 ○르호보암이 예루살렘에 살면서 유다 땅에 방비하는 성읍들을 건축하였으니
6 곧 베들레헴과 에담과 드고아와
7 벧술과 소고와 아둘람과
8 가드와 마레사와 십과
9 아도라임과 라기스와 아세가와
10 소라와 아얄론과 헤브론이니 다 유다와 베냐민 땅에 있어 견고한 성읍들이라
11 르호보암이 그 방비하는 성읍들을 더욱 견고하게 하고 지휘관들을 그 가운데에 두고 양식과 기름과 포도주를 저축하고
12 모든 성읍에 방패와 창을 두어 매우 강하게 하니라 유다와 베냐민이 르호보암에게 속하였더라
13 ○온 이스라엘의 제사장들과 레위 사람들이 그들의 모든 지방에서부터 르호보암에게 돌아오되
14 레위 사람들이 자기들의 마을들과 산업을 떠나 유다와 예루살렘에 이르렀으니 이는 여로보암과 그의 아들들이 그들을 해임하여 여호와께 제사장의 직분을 행하지 못하게 하고
15 여로보암이 여러 산당과 숫염소 우상과 자기가 만든 송아지 우상을 위하여 친히 제사장들을 세움이라
16 이스라엘 모든 지파 중에 마음을 굳게 하여 이스라엘의 하나님 여호와를 찾는 자들이 레위 사람들을 따라 예루살렘에 이르러 그들의 조상들의 하나님 여호와께 제사하고자 한지라
17 그러므로 삼 년 동안 유다 나라를 도와 솔로몬의 아들 르호보암을 강성하게 하였으니 이는 무리가 삼 년 동안을 다윗과 솔로몬의 길로 행하였음이더라
18 ○르호보암이 다윗의 아들 여리못의 딸 마할랏을 아내로 삼았으니 마할랏은 이새의 아들 엘리압의 딸 아비하일의 소생이라
19 그가 아들들 곧 여우스와 스마랴와 사함을 낳았으며
20 그 후에 압살롬의 딸 마아가에게 장가 들었더니 그가 아비야와 앗대와 시사와 슬로밋을 낳았더라
21 르호보암은 아내 열여덟 명과 첩 예순 명을 거느려 아들 스물여덟 명과 딸 예순 명을 낳았으나 압살롬의 딸 마아가를 모든 처첩보다 더 사랑하여
22 르호보암은 마아가의 아들 아비야를 후계자로 세웠으니 이는 그의 형제들 가운데 지도자로 삼아 왕으로 세우고자 함이었더라
23 르호보암이 지혜롭게 행하여 그의 모든 아들을 유다와 베냐민의 온 땅 모든 견고한 성읍에 흩어 살게 하고 양식을 후히 주고 아내를 많이 구하여 주었더라

NIV 2 Ch 8:1 At the end of twenty years, during which Solomon built the temple of the Lord and his own palace,
2 Solomon rebuilt the villages that Hiram had given him, and settled Israelites in them.
3 Solomon then went to Hamath Zobah and captured it.
4 He also built up Tadmor in the desert and all the store cities he had built in Hamath.
5 He rebuilt Upper Beth Horon and Lower Beth Horon as fortified cities, with walls and with gates and bars,
6 as well as Baalath and all his store cities, and all the cities for his chariots and for his horses-whatever he desired to build in Jerusalem, in Lebanon and throughout all the territory he ruled.
7 ○All the people left from the Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites (these peoples were not Israelites),
8 that is, their descendants remaining in the land, whom the Israelites had not destroyed-these Solomon conscripted for his slave labor force, as it is to this day.
9 But Solomon did not make slaves of the Israelites for his work; they were his fighting men, commanders of his captains, and commanders of his chariots and charioteers.
10 They were also King Solomon’s chief officials-two hundred and fifty officials supervising the men.
11 ○Solomon brought Pharaoh’s daughter up from the City of David to the palace he had built for her, for he said, “My wife must not live in the palace of David king of Israel, because the places the ark of the Lord has entered are holy.”
12 ○On the altar of the Lord that he had built in front of the portico, Solomon sacrificed burnt offerings to the Lord,
13 according to the daily requirement for offerings commanded by Moses for Sabbaths, New Moons and the three annual feasts-the Feast of Unleavened Bread, the Feast of Weeks and the Feast of Tabernacles.
14 In keeping with the ordinance of his father David, he appointed the divisions of the priests for their duties, and the Levites to lead the praise and to assist the priests according to each day’s requirement. He also appointed the gatekeepers by divisions for the various gates, because this was what David the man of God had ordered.
15 They did not deviate from the king’s commands to the priests or to the Levites in any matter, including that of the treasuries.
16 ○All Solomon’s work was carried out, from the day the foundation of the temple of the Lord was laid until its completion. So the temple of the Lord was finished.
17 ○Then Solomon went to Ezion Geber and Elath on the coast of Edom.
18 And Hiram sent him ships commanded by his own officers, men who knew the sea. These, with Solomon’s men, sailed to Ophir and brought back four hundred and fifty talents of gold, which they delivered to King Solomon.

NIV 2 Ch 9:1 When the queen of Sheba heard of Solomon’s fame, she came to Jerusalem to test him with hard questions. Arriving with a very great caravan-with camels carrying spices, large quantities of gold, and precious stones-she came to Solomon and talked with him about all she had on her mind.
2 Solomon answered all her questions; nothing was too hard for him to explain to her.
3 When the queen of Sheba saw the wisdom of Solomon, as well as the palace he had built,
4 the food on his table, the seating of his officials, the attending servants in their robes, the cupbearers in their robes and the burnt offerings he made at the temple of the Lord, she was overwhelmed.
5 ○She said to the king, “The report I heard in my own country about your achievements and your wisdom is true.
6 But I did not believe what they said until I came and saw with my own eyes. Indeed, not even half the greatness of your wisdom was told me; you have far exceeded the report I heard.
7 How happy your men must be! How happy your officials, who continually stand before you and hear your wisdom!
8 Praise be to the Lord your God, who has delighted in you and placed you on his throne as king to rule for the Lord your God. Because of the love of your God for Israel and his desire to uphold them forever, he has made you king over them, to maintain justice and righteousness.”
9 ○Then she gave the king 120 talents of gold, large quantities of spices, and precious stones. There had never been such spices as those the queen of Sheba gave to King Solomon.
10 ○(The men of Hiram and the men of Solomon brought gold from Ophir; they also brought algumwood and precious stones.
11 The king used the algumwood to make steps for the temple of the Lord and for the royal palace, and to make harps and lyres for the musicians. Nothing like them had ever been seen in Judah.)
12 ○King Solomon gave the queen of Sheba all she desired and asked for; he gave her more than she had brought to him. Then she left and returned with her retinue to her own country.
13 ○The weight of the gold that Solomon received yearly was 666 talents,
14 not including the revenues brought in by merchants and traders. Also all the kings of Arabia and the governors of the land brought gold and silver to Solomon.
15 ○King Solomon made two hundred large shields of hammered gold; six hundred bekas of hammered gold went into each shield.
16 He also made three hundred small shields of hammered gold, with three hundred bekas of gold in each shield. The king put them in the Palace of the Forest of Lebanon.
17 ○Then the king made a great throne inlaid with ivory and overlaid with pure gold.
18 The throne had six steps, and a footstool of gold was attached to it. On both sides of the seat were armrests, with a lion standing beside each of them.
19 Twelve lions stood on the six steps, one at either end of each step. Nothing like it had ever been made for any other kingdom.
20 All King Solomon’s goblets were gold, and all the household articles in the Palace of the Forest of Lebanon were pure gold. Nothing was made of silver, because silver was considered of little value in Solomon’s day.
21 The king had a fleet of trading ships manned by Hiram’s men. Once every three years it returned, carrying gold, silver and ivory, and apes and baboons.
22 ○King Solomon was greater in riches and wisdom than all the other kings of the earth.
23 All the kings of the earth sought audience with Solomon to hear the wisdom God had put in his heart.
24 Year after year, everyone who came brought a gift-articles of silver and gold, and robes, weapons and spices, and horses and mules.
25 ○Solomon had four thousand stalls for horses and chariots, and twelve thousand horses, which he kept in the chariot cities and also with him in Jerusalem.
26 He ruled over all the kings from the River to the land of the Philistines, as far as the border of Egypt.
27 The king made silver as common in Jerusalem as stones, and cedar as plentiful as sycamore-fig trees in the foothills.
28 Solomon’s horses were imported from Egypt and from all other countries.
29 ○As for the other events of Solomon’s reign, from beginning to end, are they not written in the records of Nathan the prophet, in the prophecy of Ahijah the Shilonite and in the visions of Iddo the seer concerning Jeroboam son of Nebat?
30 Solomon reigned in Jerusalem over all Israel forty years.
31 Then he rested with his fathers and was buried in the city of David his father. And Rehoboam his son succeeded him as king.

NIV 2 Ch 10:1 Rehoboam went to Shechem, for all the Israelites had gone there to make him king.
2 When Jeroboam son of Nebat heard this (he was in Egypt, where he had fled from King Solomon), he returned from Egypt.
3 So they sent for Jeroboam, and he and all Israel went to Rehoboam and said to him:
4 “Your father put a heavy yoke on us, but now lighten the harsh labor and the heavy yoke he put on us, and we will serve you.”
5 ○Rehoboam answered, “Come back to me in three days.” So the people went away.
6 ○Then King Rehoboam consulted the elders who had served his father Solomon during his lifetime. “How would you advise me to answer these people?” he asked.
7 ○They replied, “If you will be kind to these people and please them and give them a favorable answer, they will always be your servants.”
8 ○But Rehoboam rejected the advice the elders gave him and consulted the young men who had grown up with him and were serving him.
9 He asked them, “What is your advice? How should we answer these people who say to me, ‘Lighten the yoke your father put on us’?”
10 ○The young men who had grown up with him replied, “Tell the people who have said to you, ‘Your father put a heavy yoke on us, but make our yoke lighter’-tell them, ‘My little finger is thicker than my father’s waist.
11 My father laid on you a heavy yoke; I will make it even heavier. My father scourged you with whips; I will scourge you with scorpions.’ “
12 ○Three days later Jeroboam and all the people returned to Rehoboam, as the king had said, “Come back to me in three days.”
13 The king answered them harshly. Rejecting the advice of the elders,
14 he followed the advice of the young men and said, “My father made your yoke heavy; I will make it even heavier. My father scourged you with whips; I will scourge you with scorpions.”
15 So the king did not listen to the people, for this turn of events was from God, to fulfill the word the Lord had spoken to Jeroboam son of Nebat through Ahijah the Shilonite.
16 ○When all Israel saw that the king refused to listen to them, they answered the king: “What share do we have in David, what part in Jesse’s son? To your tents, O Israel! Look after your own house, O David!” So all the Israelites went home.
17 But as for the Israelites who were living in the towns of Judah, Rehoboam still ruled over them.
18 ○King Rehoboam sent out Adoniram, who was in charge of forced labor, but the Israelites stoned him to death. King Rehoboam, however, managed to get into his chariot and escape to Jerusalem.
19 So Israel has been in rebellion against the house of David to this day.

NIV 2 Ch 11:1 When Rehoboam arrived in Jerusalem, he mustered the house of Judah and Benjamin-a hundred and eighty thousand fighting men-to make war against Israel and to regain the kingdom for Rehoboam.
2 ○But this word of the Lord came to Shemaiah the man of God:
3 “Say to Rehoboam son of Solomon king of Judah and to all the Israelites in Judah and Benjamin,
4 ‘This is what the Lord says: Do not go up to fight against your brothers. Go home, every one of you, for this is my doing.’ ” So they obeyed the words of the Lord and turned back from marching against Jeroboam.
5 ○Rehoboam lived in Jerusalem and built up towns for defense in Judah:
6 Bethlehem, Etam, Tekoa,
7 Beth Zur, Soco, Adullam,
8 Gath, Mareshah, Ziph,
9 Adoraim, Lachish, Azekah,
10 Zorah, Aijalon and Hebron. These were fortified cities in Judah and Benjamin.
11 He strengthened their defenses and put commanders in them, with supplies of food, olive oil and wine.
12 He put shields and spears in all the cities, and made them very strong. So Judah and Benjamin were his.
13 ○The priests and Levites from all their districts throughout Israel sided with him.
14 The Levites even abandoned their pasturelands and property, and came to Judah and Jerusalem because Jeroboam and his sons had rejected them as priests of the Lord.
15 And he appointed his own priests for the high places and for the goat and calf idols he had made.
16 Those from every tribe of Israel who set their hearts on seeking the Lord , the God of Israel, followed the Levites to Jerusalem to offer sacrifices to the Lord, the God of their fathers.
17 They strengthened the kingdom of Judah and supported Rehoboam son of Solomon three years, walking in the ways of David and Solomon during this time.
18 ○Rehoboam married Mahalath, who was the daughter of David’s son Jerimoth and of Abihail, the daughter of Jesse’s son Eliab.
19 She bore him sons: Jeush, Shemariah and Zaham.
20 Then he married Maacah daughter of Absalom, who bore him Abijah, Attai, Ziza and Shelomith.
21 Rehoboam loved Maacah daughter of Absalom more than any of his other wives and concubines. In all, he had eighteen wives and sixty concubines, twenty-eight sons and sixty daughters.
22 ○Rehoboam appointed Abijah son of Maacah to be the chief prince among his brothers, in order to make him king.
23 He acted wisely, dispersing some of his sons throughout the districts of Judah and Benjamin, and to all the fortified cities. He gave them abundant provisions and took many wives for them.
